Rachel Crockett Smith

Rachel Crockett Smith is a visual artist based in Northern Virginia. She grew up in Phoenix, Arizona and earned her BFA in painting and drawing at Brigham Young University. Crockett Smith works predominantly in oils on panel in an abstract style focusing heavily on the application of pure colors and shapes to evoke a feeling of energy, movement and calmness. Her work explores the interaction of the circle and square motifs in religious and philosophical contexts. She particularly enjoys the way that a circle encased within a square creates a sense of what is hidden and what is revealed, somewhat like a porthole.

Crockett Smith has exhibited in numerous galleries along the East Coast and in the Mountain West. In 2019, she won a Jurors’ Choice Award from the Vision of the Arts Fund and was awarded their Mother Artist Grant. She lives with her husband, four young daughters, and two dogs in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. In addition to painting, she enjoys playing the piano and is learning to play the organ.

“I believe moments are always filled with meaning when we look for it. The creative process helps me understand moments in life—both positive and negative—and how those experiences work together for good.”
