My work begins with a multi-layered and textured surface made with cold wax medium and oil paint. The cold wax enables me to create a surface that appears organic and serendipitous. I try to encourage happy accidents and leave rational thought on the doorstep while I build the base layers. Once a desirable surface is achieved I switch hats and add structure to the composition. Unlike the layer building, this phase of the process uses quite a lot of thought, planning and measurements and is far less intuitive. The goal of this process is to create work that balances the effect of human choices with chance, futility and nature and any other forces we may not ever be able to control, comprehend or recognize.
