I believe that art has the power to capture and evoke the emotions of life’s most ordinary and profound moments. As an artist I draw my inspiration from the patterns, anomalies, and occasional chaos of everyday living. These moments are always filled with meaning when I take the time to find it.
Certain elements of my work—color, shape, composition, and texture—reflect these everyday experiences and their significance. While some elements are applied purposefully and with much thought, others are happy accidents, and some others, not so happy. Each element is important and each painting would be incomplete without them all.
My work begins as a single thought or impression. Throughout my day, I record ideas in my sketchbook, which I develop over the following days and weeks into symbols, shapes, and simple compositions. I reference these sketches as I begin to work with oil paints on large pieces of paper and wooden panels. My paintings develop organically as I work, rather than being strictly planned from the beginning. I use a variety of tools to apply the paint, including brushes, painting knives, squeegees, plexiglass plates, and stencils. At any given moment, I have up to a dozen paintings at different stages on drying racks, waiting for completion.
My paintings are abstract in style, allowing viewers to appreciate the work through the lens of their personal experiences. The titles are an integral part of the works themselves. They are not meant to prescribe a specific interpretation; rather they describe a path of meaning on which the viewer may wish to travel.
