Susan Sharpe is a largely self-taught artist who specializes in local landscape painting in oil. She and her husband have owned land along the Rappahannock River in Hume for over 30 years, gradually moving from weekenders to full time residents. After a long career teaching English at Northern Virginia Community College, Susan began taking courses in drawing and painting about ten years ago, at first at the Art League in Alexandria and then as an apprentice to Karen Ward in Jeffersonton. She is a vigorous observer of both art and nature, with memberships in the Virginia Native Plant Society and The Chestnut Foundation, and a lifelong love of a long list of painters of nature that includes Impressionists, neo-impressionists, tonalists, luminists, and the Hudson River School.
